Merry Christmas from FS! |
|
| FS Mod Leader| Blitz writes "Merry Christmas everyone!! And a very Merry Christmas it will be for me as this year has many gifts...almost all weapons coded and in game, some key vehicles in game, and a team that just keeps suprising me everyday! There is a point in every modders life where you think to yourself "when will this end, and why am I here!", and then you wake up to find a little gift under your tree...tis a beautiful thing.

Over this last year, I have watched a team mature into a fully functioning well oiled machine. We went from seeing 1 or 2 models a week to 5-6 models in game a day. We went from have a small team of no more than 8 active people to now over 20 active people. I used to spend 5 hours a day talking to people about what ifs, and now I spend 5 hours of my day making it happen, all thanks to a very talented team.

This upcoming year will be exciting for not onlyl us but to an entire community of people, whether you are gamer, modder, SW fan or all of the above you will enjoy what we have in store. Without going into detail, I can safely say that within 3 months we will should have something playable for the community. Expect to see alot of updates of new content, but also realize that even though we are only showing you 3 or 4 things, there are almost 100 things happening daily, from animation, modeling, skinning to mapping and such. Soon you should start seeing some more in game shots of the weapons and vehicles we are currently testing, and yes we are in alpha testing phase, and its going great so far!

In closing, thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks for supporting us. Mods that have content like ours has a strict reputation to uphold and high expectations for the fans in the community, while we arent perfect we strive to meet and exceed every expection placed on us. Again, Merry Christmas and may you find a nice gift under your tree this year!

Ingame Testing Has Begun! |
|
| FSDev| Woodrow writes "Well, as you can see we've finally moved beyond models and theory into the actual game. And not just any game, but 2142. For the last two weeks we've been steadily pouring content into the 2142 engine and trying actually playing with it. And to help us with it we've recruited a team of 12 'Alpha Testers' to assist us in testing and offer feedback on the direction of our work.

So far it's been almost nonstop with the updates, as we are constantly adding in new weapons and soldiers to try out. To assist us in it we've even developed a tool in-house to distribute patches. All our testers have to do to patch is open up a little app and press a big "UPDATE" button. The tool then downloads the latest content, merges it with their last build, and repacks the mod all without any further input by the tester. This way we don't have to build installers for each patch and can add content as it's ready, thus only sending the testers the new content rather than an updated .zip with all the original stuff in it (thus keeping the downloads extremely small).
And as you can see, the results so far have been astounding. All those shots are taken in-game on medium range computers, as performance is just as important as looks here at FirstStrike. We also hope to have some in-game 2142 shots of our own custom built maps soon (we just started moving those over, and while they work they still need a little cleanup) but for now our testers get to enjoy the full star-warsyness on tweaked 2142 maps.
And for those still hoping to get a beta spot, I'm happy to say "Don't Panic!" We will be looking for at least 30 more beta testers in the coming few weeks and months. What we are looking out for in a beta tester will be someone who posts on the forums regularly, is sociable and willing to offer constructive feedback on what they see, is well regarded, and has a copy of 2142. Oh, and being on IRC helps as that's where most of us devs hang out, and where we run the testing centre anyway.
Anyhow, I'm sure I've used up enough space on this update so I'll let you all go. I guess in closing Live Long and Prosper mateys. And happy modding "

FirstStrike Anniversary Update #2 |
|
| FSDev| xEROhOUR writes "Hi fans of FirstStrike! We are coming up to a year old on this conversion now and Id like to write a little about my time here as well as some of the new and olders faces on the team. It has been quite a journey, for someone like me who did not have the feintest idea about what goes into a mod let alone a conversion its been a steep learning curve. I'd like to thank Aquila for giving me the chance here and for that I'm extremely grateful.
Basically Ive just been the "glue" here holding elements together (including some team members as they have me) and helping out with the day to day, recruitment, website and background duties on the mod. I am creating the odd model here and there (although pretty dreadful), currently working on the HUD design with MUAHAHAHA and general lore occasionally.
It has had it's ups and downs but mostly the ups have outweighed the downs. Seeing what some of the guys produce on a day to day basis is breathtaking, the talent shines and WILL shine through for a very polished and meticulously detailed and playable end product. A lot has transpired in a year and with the addition of some very skilled and talented newer members this mod has cause for real longetivity.
We are at a position now were we are very soon to go into a testing stage. This is due to the relentless talents of all the team and their persuit to bring you, the fans, your ultimate SW experience. I'm proud to be a member of the FS Team and hopefully will be for another year.
For your perusal are some Work In Progress screenshots of Endor. PLEASE note the trees are by no way finished (I can hear Lord Bandu sighing)."

FSDev| Blitz writes "In the words of El Guapo.. "What can you say about such good men!" I am very proud of this team, our progress and overcomings this past year. I will go into more detail about what I do when my turn comes for the Dev Diary, but I can say that in my position I have seen this mod come together with alot of hard work and dedication. I wouldnt trade my time here for anything as I have made alot of new good friends and I have learned alot about how the rest of the world lives. When you are trying to coordinate 20 some people in 7 different time zones, things can get hairy!
Many thanks to my team for not giving up and I can tell you community, that we have some awesome things for you! I look forward to killing all of you very shortly, so catch me if you can! Blitz TM, coming soon to a firezone near you!"

FSDev| Rybot writes "I was accepted onto the team in January and my life has not been the same since. I wouldn't trade my time here for anything. I have learned so much, and this team is so talented you can't help but to work your heart out. I see the stuff being done on a daily basis and it's mind boggling. In spite of the talent, I am still amazed at how the mod has gotten the attention that it has. We started out with high hopes for this project, when a lot of people thought it would fail, our perseverence has pulled us through. Not to say that there hasn't been rough times or tough decisions that had to be made, quite the contrary.
Whenever you get a group this big, made up of people who have never met in person, from all around the world, there are bound to be some creative differences. Our passion for the project and respect for one another has always prevailed, which gave us the strength to move past our differences and push forward. We are regular people after all. Just people with a unique labor of love. Our team has grown from a handful of guys, with almost no experience, into the multi-talented team we have today. That growth gives us all the sense that we belong to something that is going to be huge. We are constantly coming up with fresh ideas, and we now have the team to carry out those ideas. We have had our down times that felt like we were over our heads, as people would lose interest or become too busy with life to work on the mod. But now, things are moving along at speeds previously unfathomable.
The past year has been a hectic one. Has it been worth it? Absolutely. Although the real reward is yet to come. The day of our first release is a day I've anticipated for a long time. Mostly because then I'll know that we accomplished something as a team, which is a great feeling. I would like nothing more than to spend another year on FS, broadening my skills as well as continue making textures, as I know the next year will be even better than the last."

FSDev| Preacher writes "Being an FS Noob member, I can say that I am very lucky that they were kind enough to take me on. And not Only myself but Many of my Teammates from other projects. As you may or may not know, I was a member of Galactic conquest, after 3 years working on that mod, the team switched over to working on Shattered Faith, After a Year working On Shattered Faith, things fell apart, morale was Low, people lost interest, and I had to make it public that SF had died. And I thought that was it, Game over man, game over, My modding life has ended. In an quirky twist of fate, the day that I had decided SF was pretty much unsaveable, I was idling in #bfeditor on IRC as I always do, and our amazing Coder, Golden Dragon as in there, lsitening to me telling my Sob story about SF, and I think perhaps Jokeingly, he said,
Why not come work on FS. My reply bein a simple "LOL" thinking he was jokeing. We then got talking, and suddenly within about a day or two, I found myself talking to an extremely polite xero (most polite he's ever been since J/K), and I was on board.
However, Guilt started to creep in, I had managed to change teams, leaving behind Friends I have known for over 3 years, To which (many would consider Rude/Cheaky) I inquired to the FS Devs if it was possible some of my team mates would be able to come over and help. We were welcomed with open arms, and suddenly we all seemed to pile accross, and the strange thing was after say a week or two, it felt completely Natural. I felt like I had been working with these guys for years and years, we all got on so well. And this leads up to today, hear I am After finishing With Galactic conquest Swearing I'd ever work with Star Wars Again, The Love of the Films Brings me Full circle and Back to my roots as it were.
There is a Great Team behind this mod, with great ambition, and great Ideas. There is alot of Talent, Dedication to detail, and Lore accuracy (we check lore for the types of Chairs used in the hoth control room FFS! lol). I can say without a Doubt that Given time and a few releases (nothings perfect First time out), this will be an extremely polished, Accurate, and the Best Damn Star Wars based Game you've played for a Long time!"

DEV DIARY 9: TYLER 'rAMSEUS' BRENOT |
|
| Hello, and welcome to another installment in the First Strike Dev Diary series. Sorry about the slight (6 month) delay since the last diary. I'll be your host today, my name is- <crackle crackle fuzz fuzz> -but you can call me Ramseus. I am one of First Strike's humble texture artists. I come from a small planet in the vicinity of Betelgeuse... wait, wrong sci-fi. 42. Anywho, I've been with First Strike for just under a year, and I started texturing about a month before I came aboard.
Lately I've been tasked with texturing static buildings. We're not talking about dinky houses here, we're talking about 32 story tall technological terrors topped with massive satellite dishes! A daunting task, needless to say. On top of that I've had to learn the ins and outs of Battlefield's layered texturing for statics. At the end of the day though, it's a good feeling when you complete a... umm... for lack of a better word, thing.
Now I would like to show you some of what I do and how I do it.
You may remember the Endor Bunker from a few weeks ago (if you haven't seen the video go see it now!). I was responsible for texturing it. I started off with modeling high and low poly models, as seen in the picture below. For anyone who doesn't know what that means, a high poly model is one with a very high level of detail (lots of polygons) that is used to create normal maps, which are applied to the low poly model (few polygons) to give an illusion of detail. I guess that was step 0, since it's not actual texturing, but more just a starting point.

After that, I rendered out normal maps and shadows, which was step 1 (yes, the models in step 1 are the same low poly, basically flat models as seen in the above picture). Then I added some colour, step 2. To finish it off, I just "grunged it up," step 3. Simple enough, all that was left at that point was to copy and paste the walls into the already existing model of the bunker - aka the grunt work.

And finally, a peek at a currently unreleased asset. This is the turbo laser tower, lovingly modeled by our own senior Aussie, General Un-Co, and textured by myself. I've tried to show how battlefield's layered texturing works. The 3 images being "added" are 3 separate textures that get blended to form what you see in game... although it's multiply blending so they should be getting multiplied instead... meh.

The First Strike shall soon be struck. Will you answer the emperor's beckoned call? Man I'm cheesy. Until next time, this has been another First Strike Dev Diary (hopefully next time will be less than six months away).

FS VISITS EA FOR MOD DAY! |
|
| Hey gang! This year I was fortunate enough to be invited to mod day at EA headquarters in Redwood City, CA.I spent a little time before and after the actual event in the area since I had business clients near EA, so I got to see a lot of cool things. After spending the last 6 months or so of working almost 30 hours a week on this mod, it was time to take a break and enjoy some fun at EA. Im not much of a journalist, so I will do my best to give insight on my trip in my own little way. Also, despite several requests for nude photos of myself, I had to keep it clean for obvious reasons, so sorry Rybot you will just have to keep waiting

Thursday 8/31 at 13:00-Met up with Rob aka Muhahahaha aka Spiderman for lunch, was the first time we met in person and we had a really great time chatting about modding and life. After that I had a relaxing time by the pool, and then started some QC work on my laptop. I was working away when I heard someone trying to get into my room! After being a bit concerned I ran to the door to see who it was. As it turns out Brent "whos your Daddy" Dady failed to mention that I would be rooming with someone else! Turns out I was rooming with CJ from XWW2 mod, and he was quite suprised at the arrangement as well. We chatted for a bit and went our separate ways, it was now time for dinner with Rob and his girlfriend. We had a great dinner, although I think Rob's girlfriend was about to shoot us for talking so much about modding! After dinner I was privelaged enough to meet some more guys from XWW2 and even met ROK/FirstStrikes very own Sven!

A little tip for everyone, when in the bay area of CA you prob wont get anything else on TV except for surfing! So we chatted at the bar for a bit and went to bed to prepare for our next days events. I went over my list of things to ask the Dice rep, and then went to bed. Friday 9/1 at 10:00, we all gathered in the lobby of the Sofitel Hotel where we stayed. We were then met by Brent Dady from EA, and we walked a couple of blocks to EA headquarters to have some fun. After a brief stop at the EA store, we were shown to the North Pole meeting room, where we were greeted by almost 40 pc's fitted with excellent performance technology.
We were asked to split up and find a seat, we soon took to "Doing the death" as I like to call it! Only minutes past before my first outburst of "thats BS"! I was well on my way at that point of learning some new maps and being submersed in a fairly bug free environment compared to the tuning beta. After some good hours of playtime we went and had lunch courtesy of EA, I had a good time eating with Spawndemon from TB2142 and StrangerthanFiction from Forgotten Hope mod. Spawn actually has a really good article on the Totalbf2142 website, so you guys should check it out! After lunch we went to another room where we had a Q&A session with Kristoffer Bergqvist from Dice in Sweden, hes the producer of 2142. Before leaving I had the team compile some questions for such an occasion so I wasnt shy about asking lots of questions.
Not all questions were answered but I did get some face time with Kris and asked him to take the mod community serious when we say, we need their support. I was encouraged to hear his comments about a special mod team for the community and we can only hope the live up to our expectation. Again Spawndemon has more info on their website. Next we were shown the new console game Bad Company, which at this point is very Hush Hush. Now back to doing what I do best, killing the bad guys! I had a really great squad, and the gameplay flowed really well.
After sore eyes and an aching neck set in, we decided to call it a day. We had our goodbyes to everyone and Brent handed out some kool gifts including this T-Shirt, which my wife has banned me from wearing:) .

That evening I went out with Rob (FSDEV|MUHAHAHA) , his girlfriend and Andy from Voodoo Extreme for dinner and a movie. We had a great time once again, it was saddening to say goodbye to new friends but it was time to get some sleep and prepare for our flight the next day. In closing, I would like to thank EA for allowing us this opportunity, and also to a great team I have at First Strike. You guys make me proud everyday. Thanks to xEROhOUR for designing a logo for me to put on some shirts for the event. Everyone liked the shirt and everyone had really good things to say about our mod including Kris from Dice. Keep your eyes on this mod people and keep up the encouraging words. We do this for you guys, so keep holding us up everyday!
Cheers guys! FSDEV|BLITZ
